Subject: UNKNOWN OBJECT OVER OAK RIDGE, TENNESSEE, MARCH 1, 1950 VITAL FACILITIES INTERNAL SECURITY

It is reported to have detected on his radar equipment an object directly over Oak Ridge, Tennessee, at an altitude of 40,000 feet at 11:15 p.m. March 1, 1950. On March 2, 1950, he advised that his radar equipment recorded an object about 100,000 feet high and approximately 11 miles from his home in Knoxville at 11:15 a.m. on that date. It was reported that Naval Reserve radar equipment at Knoxville, Tennessee, did not detect an object on any occasion but stated that the equipment was not considered sufficient for aircraft at extreme altitudes. It was further reported that qualified persons at Oak Ridge, questioned and examined his radar equipment. They reportedly found his equipment not too reliable and felt that it was technically wrong on some of his radar theory. The reliability was also questioned due to some degree of inebriation.
